Question about patching drywall holes with mesh tape vs paper tape

I keep seeing people online say mesh tape is better for drywall patches, but my buddy who works at Home Depot in Chicago told me paper tape is stronger for seams. I tried mesh on a 4 inch hole last week and got bubbles the next day. Which tape do you all actually use for bigger repairs and why?

Honestly paper tape's the way to go for big patches, mesh just lets the mud crack and bubble.
