Question about patching a small hole in drywall without tools

I spent like 2 hours last Sunday trying to fix a door knob sized hole in my hallway wall using just a can of spackle and my hand. It looked terrible all lumpy and I ended up having to sand it down with a crumpled up paper bag. Has anyone else tried to patch drywall without a proper drywall knife and actually gotten it to look smooth?

idk, I've tried the paper bag sanding thing and it's honestly not worth the hassle. You can get a cheap plastic putty knife at the dollar store for like a buck and it makes a huge difference. I mean, your hand just doesn't give you the flat surface you need.
