Overheard a builder say to caulk your baseboards before painting and I never thought of that

I was at the hardware store last Saturday grabbing some spackle and this old contractor told his apprentice to always caulk the gap between baseboard and wall before painting. I've been painting around those little gaps for years and never once considered filling them first. Has anyone else tried this trick and does it really make that much of a difference?

Nah man, caulk traps moisture behind the baseboard and leads to rot eventually.

Forget the rot... what about the bugs that get trapped and start breeding in there.
