Neighbor told me I was painting my fence wrong

He said I needed to backbrush after rolling, not just lay it on thick. Tried it on the back section last weekend and it actually soaked in way better with no drips. Anybody else get a tip from a nosy neighbor that turned out to be good?

Backbrushing is one of those things that sounds like extra work but actually saves time in the long run because you're not going back to fix drips later. Having said that, if you're using a decent self leveling paint and not laying it on like cake frosting, you can skip the backbrush and just roll in one direction. I painted a whole shed last summer with a 3/8 nap roller and it came out smooth as glass with zero drips. Seems like the trick is more about using the right amount of paint and not flooding it on in the first place.

Right there with you, backbrushing is a game changer if you're using thicker paint but totally optional with good self leveling stuff. I did my garage with a 3/8 nap and just made sure to keep a wet edge and not overload the roller, came out perfect with zero touch ups. It's all about finding that sweet spot where you're not fighting the paint but also not rushing it.
