My uncle insisted I needed a $40 pipe wrench for a dripping faucet.

I mean, I just tightened the packing nut with a regular adjustable wrench from my kit and it stopped. Anyone know if that's actually a bad idea long-term?

Seriously... that's the whole point of an adjustable wrench. Your uncle sounds like the type who buys a special tool for every single job. If the packing nut is tight and the drip is gone, you fixed it. The only reason for a pipe wrench is if the nut was totally stuck and rounded off, and even then you'd try other stuff first. Spending forty bucks for a one-time drip is just nuts.

Wait, he wanted you to buy a whole new wrench?
