Shut the water off to the whole house until morning" - man that's about the worst timing. 2am on a Tuesday is like the universe messing with you on purpose. I had a similar thing happen but with a burst pipe in the basement wall. Had to camp out with buckets and towels until 7am when the hardware store opened. The worst part was trying to find where the main shutoff was in the dark, fumbling around with my phone flashlight. Did you end up fixing it yourself or call a plumber?

Ever try patching it with a clamp and some epoxy putty as a temporary fix? I've done that a few times on late-night leaks to buy a couple hours before the hardware store opens.
