My attempt to fix a squeaky stair tread took 4 hours and a lot of swearing

I had this one stair that squeaked every time you stepped on it, right in the middle of the tread. I thought it would be a quick fix, maybe some screws and wood glue from below in the basement. Turns out the subfloor had pulled away from the joist in a weird spot, and I ended up having to cut a small access hole in the drywall ceiling underneath to get at it. Has anyone else dealt with a squeak that just refuses to go away after the first try?

Oh man, I feel your pain lol. What finally worked for me was shimming the gap between the tread and the joist with some thin wood scraps before screwing it down.

Counter-sunk screw through the tread into the joist fixed mine for good.
