Hinge pin trick from a YouTube handyman, worked or did I get lucky?

A guy named Dave in a comment said to use a nail as a hinge pin punch instead of buying the $15 tool, so I tried it on my squeaky kitchen cabinet. It worked perfectly, but now I'm wondering if that's solid advice or just a one-time fluke, anyone else tried this shortcut and had it fail?
