Friend told me painting ceilings white is always the right choice but I'm not so sure anymore

My buddy Mike who flips houses in Tacoma said he never does anything but flat white on ceilings. Claims it hides imperfections and makes rooms feel bigger. But then I saw his last flip and the ceiling looked like a blank nothing. I painted my living room ceiling a light grey to match the trim and now the room feels warmer. Now I'm wondering if white is just lazy or actually smart. Has anyone else gone against the white ceiling rule and regretted it?

Mike's out here treating ceilings like they're all getting the same beige rental unit special. Light grey sounds way more interesting than staring at a blank white void every time you look up. White is the safe choice but safe usually means boring. I bet your room feels way more put together than his sad white box with a ceiling that looks like a sterile hospital breakroom.

Three years in a rental and I can count on one hand how many times I've actually looked up at my ceiling long enough to care what color it was. Is staring at a blank white void really that deep? My ceiling is white, it's fine, the end.
