Finally caved on a stud finder after my grandpa's trick failed me
I always swore by the knock-and-listen method my grandpa taught me growing up. But last week I was hanging a shelf in my laundry room and knocked for 20 minutes straight, still drilled into nothing but drywall. My neighbor Dave let me borrow his Franklin Sensors stud finder and I found 3 studs in under 10 seconds. Has anyone else had that experience where a cheap tool changes your mind completely?

And it's not even just about finding the studs FASTER, it's about the confidence you get back. The knock method always left me second-guessing myself, wondering if I was hearing a stud or just a weird echo from a pipe or something. With the Franklin Sensors one I borrowed, it lights up across the whole surface so you can see exactly where the edge starts and stops. That way you KNOW you're dead center, not just guessing and hoping. Once you realize how much time you wasted knocking and tapping, it's honestly a little EMBARRASSING how stubborn you were about it.
