Family friend swore by using dawn dish soap and vinegar for sealing deck boards instead of actual stain, anyone else have experience with this?

My uncle Bob told me to mix a cup of blue Dawn with a gallon of white vinegar and brush it onto my untreated pine deck last summer, and while it looked amazing for about two weeks, now I'm dealing with mildew spots and patchy gray areas that I'm worried I can't stain over, has anyone else tried this weird DIY trick or am I stuck sanding the whole thing down?

Oh man, I did the same thing! It looked like a million bucks for a week, then bad news bears. I ended up having to pressure wash it all off to get it ready for real stain.
