Caulk gun comparison: the $8 ratchet one beat my $40 smooth rod

I redid both bathrooms in my place over 6 months. First one I used that pricey smooth rod gun, kept getting drips and uneven beads no matter how I squeezed. Switched to the cheap ratchet style from Ace Hardware and it stopped the plunger drift cold. The handle clicks every few pumps and it feels crude but it just WORKS. Anyone else find cheaper tools pulling ahead in weird spots like this?

Ugh, I totally get this! I saw a contractor on YouTube swear by the cheap ones for this exact reason, said the fancy ones just cause more trouble than they're worth. It's wild how sometimes the "upgrade" is actually a downgrade in disguise.
