That mud additive I used to mix in every bucket is now sitting on the shelf after last week

Used to swear by the stuff for 10 years until I skipped it on a job in Austin and the tape stuck way better with less bubbles, anyone else ditch something they thought was essential?

Nodded along reading this til I hit the part about Austin. That's not quite right - the mud additive you're talking about probably has a bonding agent that actually hurts adhesion on drywall tape because it creates a barrier between the tape and the compound. I had the same realization a few years back when I switched to a lightweight all-purpose mix and noticed the tape laid down way smoother with less hassle.

Wait, are you saying that bonding agent is in the pre-mixed stuff too or just the additive you mix yourself? I've been using the same lightweight all-purpose for a while and it's been fine, but now I'm wondering if I should check the label closer. Did you notice a big difference right away with the tape staying put, or did it take a few jobs to really see it?
