My old foreman tore into me about my mudding technique on a Friday

I was working on a job in Cincinnati and my foreman stopped me mid-stroke. He said I was pressing too hard on the mud knife and creating ridges that would take forever to sand. I thought I was being efficient by laying it on thick. He made me watch him do a 4-foot seam with almost no pressure, just letting the mud flow. After that, I changed my whole approach and started using a lighter touch. It cut my sanding time down by like 40% on that basement finish. Has anyone else had a boss call them out on something small that made a big difference?

That foreman saved you from sanding your arms off (been there, done that). Light touch on the knife is the whole secret to mudding, no question.

Exactly. It's funny how that same principle shows up everywhere. My buddy taught me to back a trailer that way. If you overcorrect, you're gone. You have to make tiny, gentle moves. Same with wheeling a heavy cart through a tight aisle at the hardware store. The people who fight it always jam up.
