Mud mixing on a commercial site in Phoenix almost cost me a finger

Last Tuesday I was mixing joint compound with a paddle mixer on a 10,000 square foot job. The drill kicked back hard when the paddle caught a dry clump and nearly pulled my hand into the drum. I always held the trigger with one hand and the handle with the other, but that split second taught me to clamp the mixer to a work table first. Has anyone else had a drill twist on them mixing thick mud?

A buddy of mine from a drywall crew out in Tempe had this exact thing happen. He was mixing up some all-purpose mud for a hotel job and the drill caught a rock or a hard clump and twisted so hard it threw his hand into the side of the bucket. Smashed two of his knuckles pretty bad and he couldn't work for three days. He said he never thought about clamping it down either until that moment. Now he uses a big C-clamp on the handle every single time, even for small batches.
