Met a guy at a supply house who showed me a mud mixing trick that saved my back

Was at Builders Supply in Omaha last Thursday picking up my order and this older guy, probably in his 60s, saw me loading a couple buckets of pre-mixed. He laughed and said "you know you're paying for water, right?" Then he walked me out to his truck and showed me how he mixes his own from powder using a paint mixer on a low speed drill. Told me to add a splash of dish soap and let it sit for 10 minutes before using. Tried it on a ceiling job the next day and the stuff was so smooth I barely had to sand. Anyone else mix their own or am I just late to the party?

Oh man, I WAS that guy buying pre-mixed for YEARS! I always thought mixing from powder was too much work and would end up lumpy. Then a buddy forced me to try it on a small bathroom remodel last month and I'll NEVER go back. That dish soap trick is a game changer too, I added just a tiny squirt and the stuff spread like butter on a hot skillet. I actually finished the ceiling in half the time I usually do and my back didn't ache that night. You're not late, you just learned something that should be in the first week of trade school.

Bro for real, that dish soap trick changed my life on the last job. I did a whole basement ceiling and the compound was like pushing cold peanut butter around until I added one little drop of Dawn. Turned into this silky smooth paste that just glided. I was done with the first coat in 45 minutes when it usually takes me an hour and a half. And yeah, my shoulders weren't screaming at me the next day which never happens with mudding. Makes me mad I wasted so many years on that premixed garbage that costs three times as much and still gives you a crap finish.
