Seriously, how bad could they be? Old buildings always have weird construction stuff. It's probably just some extra wood up there.

My friend thought the same thing about "weird construction stuff" in her old apartment. She poked at what looked like loose boards in her closet ceiling and a whole section of plaster came down, along with about fifty years of dust and dead bugs. They found a squirrel nest up there and had to pay a ton to get it cleaned and fixed. It was not just extra wood lol.
