Flat taping vs. hand taping my own basement job

Worked for 3 years using a banjo for everything. Flat taping corners seemed faster. Then I hit a 90-degree corner in my own house last month. Mud kept blowing out, leaving gaps. Old timer walked by and said "Your angle's off because you're not letting the tape seat." Realized I'd been forcing it instead of letting the knife ride the bead. Has anyone else caught themselves doing a basic move wrong for years?

Buddy of mine spent two years doing drywall for a crew before he figured out he was loading his knife backwards. Not even kidding. Dude had the bevel facing the wrong way the whole time and just thought tape was supposed to bubble up on every corner. Foreman caught him one day and just stared for a solid ten seconds before he said "you're fighting the tool, not using it." He said it was like learning to walk again after that.

Prefloading the mud helps the tape seat without pushing out.
