Warning: that weird hum on the suction line can be a real headache
Last week on the Mississippi job near Baton Rouge, our 16-inch cutter started making this low hum in the discharge pipe. I mean, it wasn't a knock, just a steady vibration. We checked the usual stuff, pump speed, impeller clearance, all good. My lead operator, Frank, said to check the spool piece gasket we replaced three months ago. Sure enough, a tiny section had worn uneven and was letting in just enough air to cause that hum. Swapped it out and the noise was gone in ten minutes. Has anyone else had a suction line gasket fail like that without a major leak?

My buddy had that exact thing happen on a gravel pump up in Oregon. His crew spent a whole shift looking for a leak they could actually see or feel. The hum was driving them nuts. Finally, some old hand told them to soap every single flange on the suction side. Found a pinhole leak in a gasket that was just sucking air, no slurry coming out at all. They said it looked perfectly fine until the bubbles showed up.

Man, those phantom vibrations are the worst. We chased a similar hum on a 12-inch dredge line for two days last summer. Turned out to be a worn flange gasket letting in a whisper of air, just like yours. No visible leak at all, just that annoying sound.
