My boss said bigger buckets waste time. He was right.

Kept using a 5 gallon bucket on a tight spillway job. Took me 3 extra trips per shift. Switched to a 3 gallon bucket and finished 45 minutes faster yesterday.

Drove me crazy for years using bigger buckets thinking I was saving trips. Then I actually timed myself on a tight staircase remodel and realized I was spending more time walking and adjusting than I was hauling. The smaller bucket meant I could move faster and navigate corners without stopping. Changed my whole approach after that.

Wait hang on though. You timed yourself walking? I get the theory, but is it really that tight of a staircase that a bigger bucket creates that much trouble? In my experience, the time you save on fewer trips usually outweighs the fumbling unless you're working in a closet or something. I've done plenty of stair hauls at my place and honestly, a 5 gallon bucket never felt like it was costing me that much extra time. Maybe your stairs are just narrower than normal or you were hauling concrete mix or something heavy. Just seems like one of those things where it depends a lot on the job and what you're used to.
