Hot take: Dredging faster doesn't mean you're doing a better job

I swear half the guys I see running 5-yard buckets on a 3-yard swing are just piling up overflow and wasting fuel, but then the old-timer on my crew says speed keeps the project on schedule, so which side is actually right on this?

That Mississippi story from @the_drew reminds me of how people treat microwaves the same way, thinking high power always means faster food when really it just burns the edges and leaves the middle cold. Speed is great until you realize you're just moving the problem downstream.

Man, this takes me back to a job on the Mississippi back in 2019. We had this new guy running a cutterhead and he was convinced spinning the ladder at max RPM was the only way to make time. He blew through three hydraulic hoses in one shift and left a wake of mud so thick the survey boat thought we hit a sandbar. The old-timer running the pump just sat there with his coffee, shaking his head. Speed is great if you're digging clean sand, but if you're in sticky clay or mixed debris, all that extra bucket speed just churns the material into a soup that settles right back down before the discharge can move it. That's the real trick - matching your swing speed to the material and the pump's capacity, not just going as fast as the hydraulics will let you.
