Found out a harbor dredge in Mobile Bay moves more sand in a day than I do in a month
Tbh I was reading through some old Corps of Engineers reports last week and saw a number that stopped me cold. One of those big trailing suction hopper dredges can pump up to 5,000 cubic yards of material per hour off a single pipeline. I run a small 8-inch cutterhead on inland waterways, and my best shift maybe hits 200 yards an hour. Just goes to show how different worlds we work in. Has anyone else stumbled on a stat that made their own operation feel tiny?

My cousin works on a harbor tug in Galveston and he told me about a time they had to move a 40,000 ton tanker that had lost its steering. He said the whole operation took maybe four hours with two tugs pushing together. Meanwhile I spent a whole afternoon trying to get my johnboat unstuck from a mud flat. Its funny how we measure success in different ways depending on what we are working with.

Well at least your johnboat didn't need two tugs and four hours.
