Can we talk about the difference a proper ladder makes on a cutter suction dredge?
We were working on the 'Mississippi Queen' for a month, and the old access ladder to the cutter head was just a welded pipe frame. It took about 45 seconds to get down and check the teeth, and you were always hanging on for dear life. Last week, the yard installed a proper, wide aluminum ladder with real steps and a cage. Now it's a 15-second trip, one hand free to carry a tool. The boss said it was a $2,500 upgrade, but the time saved on daily checks alone is huge. Has anyone else made a small change to their rig that paid off way bigger than expected?

That thirty seconds is a lifetime in a hydraulic failure.

Honestly, that sounds like a lot of fuss over a ladder. It's just climbing down to look at some teeth, right? Saving thirty seconds a few times a day seems like a tiny thing to get excited about. I've seen guys work with way worse setups and never complain. Maybe the old one just needed a better grip tape or something simple.
