Spent 6 hours tracing a pipe run that should have taken 20 minutes

I was laying out a new HVAC duct in a basement remodel near Denver and kept hitting a wall with how the existing joists were spaced, turns out the original builder left a weird 14 inch gap that threw off my whole line. I redrew the route five times before I realized my laser level was sitting on a warped plank, so every mark was shifted by half an inch. Has anyone else had a tool setup quietly sabotage their measurements like that?

Man, that is a classic case of the tools lying to you while you blame yourself. It's funny how we always assume the equipment is fine and the problem is our own math or planning, but sometimes the ground you set up on is the real enemy. I feel like every trade has that hidden gremlin, whether it's a warped level or a tape measure that got bent once and never straightens out. The worst part is that you waste hours muttering at the prints when the answer is just to stop and check your starting point first.
