CAD file from a client nearly wrecked our whole job last Tuesday

We got a set of drawings from a structural engineer in Austin and I trusted the layer names at face value. Turns out they had two different layers both called "COLUMN" but one was shifted 18 inches off the true grid. We caught it during a clash check at the steel fabricator's shop, but only because I double checked the coordinates against the survey points. Cost us a full day and a lot of awkward calls. Has anyone else dealt with clients reusing old templates without cleaning up the layers? How do you verify before you commit to a plot?
