A project manager told me my detail callouts were 'visual noise' and it stuck with me

I was working on a set of shop drawings for a custom metal stair last month, and the project manager, a guy named Greg, pulled me aside. He said, 'Beth, I can't find the weld symbols in this forest of notes. It's all visual noise.' He was right. I had put a leader and a note on every single little thing, trying to be super clear, but it just made the sheet a mess to read. The next day, I went back and grouped related notes into a single, clean table off to the side and used more standard symbols where I could. It cut down the clutter by maybe 40 percent and the fabricator called to say the drawings were way easier to follow. Has anyone else gotten feedback that made you change how you organize information on a sheet?

Greg's comment would've stung in the moment, but that's the kind of direct feedback that actually helps you get better. It's easy to over explain when you're deep in the work. Turning that clutter into a clean table was a smart fix, and getting a call from the fabricator is the best proof it worked. Those moments where you have to step back and simplify are tough but so necessary.

Ever try color coding notes to cut down on text?
