That lady at the checkout told me to skip the dollar store pasta sauce
There's this older woman named Carol who always shops at the same Dollar Tree as me in Phoenix. She saw me grabbing Prego and said "honey, just buy the cans of crushed tomatoes and add your own spices, it's half the price and tastes way better." I finally tried it last week with some garlic powder and oregano I already had, and she was totally right. The sauce was thicker and didn't have that weird sugary taste. Has anyone else found a better DIY hack for something you always bought premade?

Ngl, isn't it way more work to doctor up canned tomatoes than just buying the jar?

Oh man, I gotta respectfully disagree there. Yeah, opening a jar is faster, but doctoring up canned tomatoes gives you way more control over the flavor. You can adjust the salt, add garlic or herbs, and dial in the sweetness to fit whatever you're making. Once you get the hang of it, it's maybe 5 minutes of extra effort for a noticeably better sauce. Have you tried it with fire-roasted canned tomatoes yet?
