Hot take: I stopped buying frozen veggie bags at the dollar store and now I grab the canned stuff instead
Ok so for like 2 years I was all about those $1.25 frozen mixed veg bags at Dollar Tree, thought I was being so smart sneaking veggies into my rice bowls. Then last month I actually sat down and did the math on what I was getting, and the frozen bags are mostly water weight once they thaw, I swear I was pouring out half a cup of ice sludge every time. So I switched to the canned green beans and corn and diced tomatoes, which are like 85 cents each at the one on 5th street near my place, and my chili actually tastes like something now instead of sad freezer mush. The one thing I do miss is the frozen broccoli, canned broccoli is just wet sadness in a can, no way around it. Also I learned the hard way that you gotta drain and rinse the canned beans unless you want your whole meal tasting like a tin can, took me 2 tries to figure that out. My grocery bill for the week dropped from like $14 to $9 which sounds small but thats $20 a month back in my pocket. Has anyone found a canned veggie that actually holds up in a stir fry or am I stuck buying the frozen broccoli forever?
I was the same way about frozen veg for the longest time, swore it was the budget hack of the century. Then I watched a youtube video where a guy weighed his frozen bag before and after thawing and it was like 40 percent water by weight, which blew my mind. Switched to canned for soups and chili and never looked back, the texture is way better when it's cooked into something for a while. For stir fry though, canned just does not work, everything turns to mush the second it hits the pan and you end up with veggie paste in your noodles. Frozen broccoli is the one thing worth keeping in the freezer, but the canned carrots and potatoes hold up fine in a roast or a stew. The rinse tip on beans is real too, my first pot of chili tasted like I licked a penny.
