Can we talk about how long it took me to find a decent can opener at Dollar Tree?

I grabbed a can opener there last week and it completely jammed on my second can of beans. After 15 minutes of fighting with it, I tried another brand from the same store and that one took me 20 minutes to get open because the handle kept slipping. So which is better: spending $1.25 on a gamble that might waste your time, or just paying $5 for a real opener at Walmart? Has anyone else had this problem or found a specific dollar store brand that actually works?

Had a buddy swear by the Dollar Tree can openers, said they were just as good as the fancy ones. He bought one, took it home, and it bent the lid so bad on a can of tomato soup the thing wouldn't even seal right when he tried to put it in the fridge. Next day he went back and bought a different brand, one with those little plastic grips on the handle. That one lasted maybe three cans before the little metal wheel that cuts the lid just snapped clean off. He finally just paid eight bucks for a good one at the hardware store and said it was the best eight bucks he ever spent.
