My neighbor the carpenter changed how I look at drywall mud

So I was chatting with Tim from across the street last weekend while he was fixing his garage siding. He mentioned he never sands joint compound anymore, just uses a wet sponge and a light touch. I laughed at first because that sounded like extra work to me. But he showed me on a patch he was doing and the finish was barely any different from sanding. I tried it on a small repair in my laundry room yesterday and it cut my cleanup time by like 20 minutes. Anyone else ditch sandpaper for the wet sponge method or am I crazy?

...and honestly, once you get the knack for it it's actually easier for me too. I tried the wet sponge thing a few years back on a ceiling repair and I'll never go back to sanding. The dust alone is worth ditching the sandpaper, you know? It makes such a mess and I swear I'm still finding it in random places months later. Plus with the sponge you don't accidentally gouge the mud when you hit it at a bad angle (which I used to do all the time). I do find you gotta be careful not to oversaturate the sponge though, or you'll end up with these weird soft spots that take forever to dry.
