Just realized I've been painting trim wrong for 10 years

Always did the brush strokes following the length of the board, but a guy at the hardware store said to paint across the grain instead for a smoother finish. Which way do you all do it, or am I the only one who never knew this?

Heard a similar thing from a painting crew working on my neighbor's house, they swore by painting with the grain for trim though. Apparently the cross-grain method works better on bare wood where it fills the pores evenly. Been doing it the wrong way too apparently, might have to test it on a scrap piece first to see the difference.

Three years of painting baseboards in my old house and I only just found out the same thing last month. I was doing it along the grain on every single board, thinking that was the professional way. The cross-grain trick actually does fill in the little grooves way better, I tested it on a scrap piece of pine and the difference was crazy. Now I feel like I gotta go back and redo half my living room but honestly I'm too tired lol.
