I finally stopped overcomplicating my drywall mudding after a contractor showed me his trick

I was at a Habitat for Humanity build near Houston last month and this old contractor just used a 12 inch knife with no extra tools. He told me to stop using those fancy corner boxes and just work the mud in with the knife. Took half the time on my last bathroom ceiling. Anyone else ditched the gadgets for basic tools?

Wait wait wait. You're telling me this guy just used a 12 inch knife and no corner boxes? On a bathroom ceiling? That's insane. I've been fighting with those stupid corner boxes for years, they always leave these weird ridges and I end up sanding forever. I gotta try this, my last ceiling job took three times as long because I was fussing with all that junk.

Yeah that "weird ridges" thing is the exact reason I gave up on corner boxes too. I tried a 12 inch knife on my last garage ceiling after watching a YouTube video and honestly it was way smoother with way less mess. Your mileage may vary but I'm never going back to the fancy stuff either.
