Unpopular opinion: pine is fine for most shelves, spend your money on better brackets instead
Last month I helped a friend put up shelving in his garage in Denver. He insisted on buying $80 oak boards from the big box store because everyone online said pine will sag. I've been using pine from the same lumber yard for 3 years now in my own workshop and nothing has sagged a millimeter. He spent triple the money and still had to buy heavy duty L brackets to hold the oak. Has anyone else noticed that the bracket choice matters way more than the wood species for standard shelf loads?

$80 for oak boards from a big box store? That's highway robbery.
