Three coats of primer later, I finally understand paint chemistry
I spent a whole month trying to cover a smoke stain on a ceiling with cheap latex paint, and it kept bleeding through no matter what I did. After 3 coats of regular primer and about 14 hours of rolling, a buddy finally told me to use shellac-based primer in a spray can. That stuff killed the stain in one pass, took maybe 20 minutes including setup. I was furious at myself, because the shellac can cost $18 and I had burned $60 on paint that never stood a chance. Lesson learned: some stains are about solvents, not just color coverage. Has anyone else wasted a weekend on a cover-up job that needed a specific primer type from the start?

Feel your pain on that one, been there with a water stain that laughed at my primer. Shellac is magic but nobody tells you until you've already wasted your whole weekend.
