That stupid $18 dimmer switch in my hallway took me 4 hours and two trips to Ace
I figured swapping a light switch for a dimmer would be a 20 minute job, tops. Wrong. The wiring in my 1962 house has no ground wire, so the smart dimmer I grabbed first was useless and I had to drive back to Ace for a basic one. Then the box was so shallow the new switch wouldn't fit, so I had to chisel out drywall for 40 minutes trying not to crack the whole wall. I flipped the breaker, got it wired, turned it on, and the lights just flickered like a haunted house. Turns out I had the traveler wire mixed up with the hot, which cost me another hour of testing with a $9 multimeter. Finally got it working at 9pm and my wife asked why the hallway light was on a dimmer when the kitchen still has a pull chain. Has anyone else dealt with old wiring fighting every single upgrade you try?
