Showerthought: a guy at my lumber yard said sanding to 220 on pine is a waste, and I think he is right
He told me this last Saturday while I was loading 2x4s, and my gut said he was just being lazy. So I did a test on scrap pine boards, sanding one to 220 and leaving one at 150 before stain. The 220 one actually took stain worse, all blotchy and pale, while the 150 one soaked it in nice and even. I get that 220 feels smoother to your hand, but for pine that is getting stained, going past 150 is just burning time and sandpaper. I spent 30 bucks on grits I did not need and lost a Saturday afternoon I could have spent on the actual build. Curious if anyone else has tested this on oak or maple, or is 220 the right move for hardwood?
