Serious question, my brother in law told me my grout lines looked like a drunk did them, and he was right

I was floating Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA on a 12x24 bathroom floor at 1/8 inch spacing without a leveling system, just eyeballing it off the tile edges, and he said the joints wandered up to a quarter inch in spots. Bought a $40 clip system, did the whole rebuild after popping out 9 tiles, and it came out dead straight. Anyone here skip the clips on big plank tile and actually regret it later?
