Rant: I paid $85 for a stud finder that works, after two cheap ones wasted my weekend
I hung three floating shelves in my kitchen last month and the first two stud finders I bought (a $20 one and a $35 one) both gave me garbage readings on my old plaster walls. I ended up drilling eight holes that hit nothing but air, and patching all of them cost me another Saturday morning. Then I grabbed a $85 magnetic one at the hardware store in Tacoma and it found every stud in about ten seconds flat. That one tool turned a two day headache into a 45 minute job. I know $85 sounds nuts for a magnet on a string, but it paid for itself in patch compound and sanity. What is your cutoff price for a tool you only use a few times a year?
