PSA: Stop painting over outlet covers and switch plates

I was helping a friend paint their living room last Saturday and noticed they had just painted right over the outlet covers without removing them first. The paint was already starting to crack and peel around the screw holes, and now they have to either scrape it all off or buy new covers. Has anyone else dealt with this mess?

My buddy did the exact same thing in their first apartment, figured it would save time but ended up spending hours picking dried paint flakes out of the screw holes. They finally just gave up and bought new plastic covers from the hardware store for like two bucks each. So yeah, that "time saver" really backfired big time.

It's funny how we think shortcuts will save time but they almost always just create more work in the long run. Seems like that's the story with everything these days, doesn't it.
