PSA: Check your basement sump pump battery before spring thaw

My backup sump pump battery died silently sometime in January, so when the snow melted last Tuesday in Minneapolis, my basement took on 3 inches of water before I noticed. The float switch was stuck from a tiny piece of debris, and the alarm never went off because the battery was completely dead. Anyone else deal with a silent sump failure, or do you have a routine to test yours every month?

Did you test the battery at all after installing it, or just assume it would work?
