Paid $380 for a fancy drain snake, still had to call a plumber
I thought I was being smart last spring in Columbus. My kitchen sink kept backing up every few weeks so I bought one of those motorized drum snakes from the big box store. The first time it cleared the clog in like 10 minutes and I felt great about saving the $200 plumber trip. But then the cable got stuck on a sharp turn in the old cast iron pipe, twisted up real bad, and I could not get it back out. Had to pay a plumber $450 to pull both the snake and the blockage out, and he showed me where my pipe had a crack from the torque. That tool is now sitting in my garage as a very expensive paperweight. I guess for simple clogs a manual snake works fine, but should I have just paid for a camera inspection first? Anyone else get burned by buying pro gear for a one time job?
