My old rain barrel idea got a major upgrade with a basic filter system
I used to just catch rainwater in a barrel for my plants, but it would get gross fast. Then I saw a tutorial on adding a simple screen and charcoal filter to clean it up. It was a cheap afternoon project with stuff from the local store. Now I have way more clean water for my veggie patch without buying any. Have you found good ways to keep collected water fresh for longer?

In my town, I see more people tweaking their rain barrels each year. That screen and charcoal trick is becoming standard practice. Almost makes me wonder why we didn't all do this sooner.

Did your grandma also swear by adding charcoal to her garden water, or was that just my family's weird thing?

Ha! Yeah that charcoal thing is real. My grandma used to throw crushed charcoal bits into her watering can every time and her tomatoes were always the biggest on the block. @hart.reese you're spot on about the rain barrel upgrades, I started doing the screen and charcoal thing last year and the difference is wild. You ever try using bamboo charcoal chunks instead of the regular stuff?
