My father-in-law swore by latex paint for bathrooms but it peeled off after 8 months in my humid shower stall.
Told me to ignore the label and use cheap wall paint instead of kitchen and bath stuff, now I'm scraping chunks of paint off my tile at 10 PM and wondering if I just saved $15 versus using the right product in the first place.

Man, nothing says quality time with family like scraping regret off the walls at 10 PM. Your father-in-law probably meant well, but he must have missed the memo that modern paint chemistry isn't a choose-your-own-adventure. Hope the next $15 you save doesn't cost you another weekend of manual labor.

My cousin tried that whole "save a buck with whatever paint" approach on his deck last summer. Used some barn paint he found in the back of his shed, figured it was good enough. Three months later the thing looked like a zebra with mange, peeling in stripes. Took us a whole Saturday with pressure washers and wire brushes to get that mess off, and his wife still brings it up at every family dinner. Sometimes the cheapest option ends up costing you the most, especially when your time is the real price tag.
