Guy at the hardware store saved me from a bad drywall job

Was grabbing joint compound at the local Ace in Cleveland last month. Old dude in a flannel stops me and says "that tape won't stick if your mud is too dry." I was just gonna mix it by eye like always. He showed me the right consistency right there in the aisle. Has anyone else had a random stranger fix a major screw-up before you even made it?

Mix it until it's like soft peanut butter. If it's too crumbly and pulling away from the knife, add more water a splash at a time until it looks like frosting you'd spread on a cake.

Did the flannel guy hang around to watch you mix it or did he just drop the wisdom and bail?
