That cheap monitor arm nearly killed my desk last week

I picked up a $25 gas spring monitor arm off Amazon back in August, figured it was good enough for my 24-inch screen. Last Thursday I was just reaching for my coffee when the whole thing tilted forward and slammed my monitor face down on the desk. The plastic clamp had snapped right where it grips the desk edge, no warning at all. Thankfully it only cracked the bezel and not the screen, but my keyboard took a beating too. The seller's listing had all these 5 star reviews but I bet they're mostly bots or people who only used it for a week. I'm going back to a solid wooden shelf and a cheap VESA stand I can bolt through the desk instead. Has anyone else had a gas spring arm fail on them like this?

Twenty five dollars for a gas spring arm that's supposed to hold a monitor for years sounds like you got exactly what you paid for. A proper gas spring arm from a known brand like Ergotron or Amazon Basics costs more but uses real metal parts and tested gas cylinders that don't fail after two months. Sometimes the risk of cheap hardware isn't worth saving forty bucks when it could cost you a whole new monitor and keyboard.
