Spent $35 on a clamp-on cable tray and it sagged within a week

I bought one of those cheap clamp-on cable trays from Amazon to clean up the mess under my standing desk. It was only $35 and looked fine in the photos, but after a week the metal bent under the weight of just three power bricks. Now I'm looking at building my own with a wooden shelf and some L-brackets from the hardware store. Has anyone else had luck with DIY cable trays that actually hold up over time?

Feel your pain, cheap metal trays just can't handle real weight. I built one from a pine shelf board and some heavy duty L brackets from Lowes and its been solid for over a year now. Just make sure you pre drill the holes so the wood doesnt split when you screw the brackets in.

Pre drilling is the REAL secret right there. I did the SAME thing with a thick oak board from a scrap pile and it holds my whole printer setup no problem.
