I was wrong about cheap monitor risers for a year, then I saw my friend's setup

I always used old textbooks or a random box to lift my monitor, figured it didn't matter. Last month my buddy Dan showed me his desk from 6 weeks after he bought a $15 IKEA shelf and some rubber feet. His neck pain went away, his posture looked totally different. I finally copied him and within 3 days my shoulders stopped hurting when gaming. Turns out having a solid, level riser at the right height makes a huge difference over something wobbly or too low. Anyone else stuck on a cheap fix that actually backfired for months?

Oh man, I was the king of the "stack of old magazines" riser until my cat sneezed near my desk and the whole thing took down my monitor like a drunk Jenga tower. Switched to a proper riser the next day and honestly my neck's been thanking me ever since.

Whoa hold up, you're right about the neck pain but wrong about one thing. Books and boxes actually work fine if you get the height perfect - the real issue is stability. I used a fat hardcover textbook for six months and it was actually level, but every time I bumped my desk the whole monitor wobbled. That micro-wobble was subtly messing with my focus without me realizing. The big difference with a proper riser isn't the material, it's the non-slip feet that grip the desk and keep everything rock solid. Your shoulders probably stopped hurting because the monitor wasn't subtly shaking your whole arm while you were gaming. What made you finally switch from the textbook setup?
