Helped a neighbor build a monitor stand out of scrap wood last month

My neighbor across the street saw me hauling old pallets into my garage and asked if I could help him raise his screens. He was using stacked books before and his neck was killing him. We measured his desk top and cut two solid pallet boards to 12 inches tall, then sanded them down smooth. He painted them matte black and now his dual monitors sit at eye level without spending a dime. Does anyone else have creative free builds that solved a nagging problem?

Built some wall shelves from leftover cedar fence pickups last spring. The brackets were just scrap 2x4s cut at 45 degree angles. Ugly as sin but they hold my cookbooks perfectly. My wife calls them "the mangled shelves" but hey they work. That pallet stand sounds way cleaner than my attempts. I swear I spend more time making things look half decent than I do actually building them.

You know, I actually don't think ugly shelves are a bad thing at all. Function should win over looks every time, especially with scrap wood that would just end up in a pile anyway. Your wife might call them mangled but I bet they've outlasted some fancy store-bought shelves by now.
