Can we talk about people using zip ties for EVERYTHING in desk builds?

I keep seeing photos online where folks just zip tie every cable to the bottom of their desk. Like four or five zip ties holding everything tight. Then they wonder why their monitor starts flickering after a month. It's because that tight tension can damage the cable jacket over time, especially on cheaper USB cords. I found this out the hard way after replacing a keyboard cable twice last year. I switched to velcro straps and magnetic clips from an office supply store for like $8 total. Has anyone else run into this issue with zip ties crushing their cables?

Yeah absolutely. Zip ties are way too tight for most cables and it's a disaster waiting to happen. I learned this the hard way when my mouse cord got crushed inside the jacket and started shorting out on me. That tension just keeps stressing the cable until something breaks inside. Velcro straps are the way to go, they let you snug things up without crushing the wires. Plus they're reusable so you can move things around without cutting and replacing ties every time.

Oh man, I gotta push back a little on the zip tie thing. Honestly, you're not wrong about overtightening being a problem, but the real issue is using them wrong in the first place. I've seen people crank zip ties down like they're securing a car battery, and yeah, that'll crush any cable. But if you just snug them up enough to hold the bundle together without crushing, they're totally fine. The trick is to leave a little gap so you can still slide the cables around inside the tie if you need to. Velcro is definitely more forgiving, especially if you're always rearranging stuff, but zip ties aren't cable killers if you're not a gorilla with them.
