Built my monitor stand from a $14 IKEA shelf vs. a $70 gas arm, and I think half of you are wasting money
I had two setups going in my apartment in Columbus for the past 5 months, one with a cheap wooden riser I cut myself and one with a clamp-on gas spring arm, and the riser won for me. The riser cost me $14 in wood and screws and took 40 minutes to build, while the arm ran $70 and wobbled every time I bumped my desk during a meeting. The riser also gave me a shelf underneath for my keyboard when I eat lunch at my desk, which the arm can't do at all. But I get why people swear by the arm, since it frees up the whole desktop and you can push the screen back way further. My neck hurt for the first week on the riser until I stacked two old textbooks under it to get the height right, so it's not magic either. So which side are you on, fixed wood riser or clamping gas arm, and did the arm actually fix your neck or just your cable mess?
